Nine people injured in horror freeway crash in Adelaide

Police have revealed details of how nine people were injured in a horror freeway crash involving seven cars, a bus and a truck.

Nine people have been injured after a horror crash on an Adelaide freeway involving seven cars, a bus and a truck.

Police said the crash happened just before 3.45pm on Sunday in Glen Osmond at the intersection of Glen Osmond Rd and Portrush Rd at the bottom of the South Eastern Fwy.

“A Mitsubishi truck towing a trailer was unable to stop as he entered the intersection of Cross Rd,” police said inn a statement.

“The truck driver was travelling along the downtrack before crashing into a Hyundai SUV and a bus, which were stationary at the intersection.

“The truck then continued across the intersection crashing into another five vehicles. The impact also caused a Hyundai sedan to crash into a Toyota sedan.”

The injured people range in age from 23 to 88.

The 60-year-old truck driver, from Queensland, was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A 76-year-old man, from Chiton, who was behind the wheel of the Hyundai SUV was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

His passengers, a 66-year-old woman from Chiton and a 23-year-old woman from Killara in NSW, were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A 68-year-old man from Mount Barker, who was driving the bus, was not injured but two female passengers, aged 88 and 49 who are both from Ridgehaven, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

A 73-year-old man from Coomandook, who was driving a Subaru SUV, and his 73-year-old female passenger from Riverglades, were both treated in hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of a Skoda sedan, a 72-year-old woman from Urrbrae, also suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital.

Police said all the injured people were taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The other drivers involved in the collision were not injured.

They were a 42-year-old man from North Brighton who was driving a Mitsubishi sedan, a 30-year-old man from Greenacres behind the wheel of a Toyota sedan, a 50-year-old woman from Normanville driving a Ford sedan, and a 50-year-old man from Balhannah behind the wheel of a Toyota sedan.

The intersection was closed for most of Sunday night but reopened on Monday, although traffic lights still needed repair and motorists were warned to expect delays.

“Investigations into the crash are continuing,” police said.
