A Queensland mother and daughter duo had to rush to hospital after a routine drive turned into anything but.

Tanya Droste was driving down the Bruce Highway at North Lakes, north of Brisbane, on Wednesday morning, with her mother Robyn, 76, sitting happily in the passenger seat.

The pair saw some debris on the road up ahead but didn’t think much of it.

Suddenly, though, as they got closer, the mystery object flew towards them after the car in front flicked it up as it drove over it.

It all went down so fast that Robyn only started to piece together what happened when she noticed blood everywhere.

“I didn’t see the object at all. All I heard was Tanya yell, ‘Far out’,” she told 7NEWS.

“And the next thing I know — I must have been hit but I didn’t really feel it — but I looked down and I had blood all down my shirt.”

The metal object smashed through the windshield, tearing up and gouging out the bonnet of the car in the process, to land squarely on Robyn’s forehead.

Brutal photos of the incident show a bump on Robyn’s head the size of an egg.

Quickly realising it was serious, Robyn’s daughter rushed to hospital where her mother’s head wound was treated.

She was also found to have concussion over the incident.

It’s still unclear what exactly the unidentified object was that caused so much damage.

The women said it weighs about four kilograms. It looks like some kind of rounded tile or roof shingle.
