A major defect in a popular car range has prompted an urgent recall being issued for people to take it into their mechanic and get it fixed.

Almost 2000 models of a popular family car have been recalled after a major defect was found in the vehicle’s airbag system.

An urgent recall notice for 1870 Volkswagen Caddies was issued on Friday by the Federal Department of Infrastructure, Transport, and Regional Development.

The models range between 2021 and 2023.

The recall notice states an airbag deactivation switch may have been incorrectly fitted in the affected models, instead of a blanking plug.

“This could cause the driver to assume that the front passenger airbag has been deactivated when it is always operational,” the recall notice states.

It states a dangerous situation could unfold if a child was seated in the front seat due to the deactivated airbag, when it is actually active.

Owners of affected Caddies are advised to take the vehicle to their nearest Volkswagen dealership to have it inspected and rectified, free of charge.

Last year, more than 2000 Volkswagen Amaroks were recalled over defective drive shaft bolts – which the department said could increase the risk of accident, injury or death.
