‘Hear his screams’: Responder recalls horror NSW crash

A first responder who arrived at a crash which claimed the lives of three young people, has recalled the harrowing screams which have not left her since.

A first responder has recalled the harrowing screams she heard after arriving at a “horrific” crash which claimed the lives of three young people in NSW.

Emergency services were called to an intersection in Tarago, about 40km south of Goulburn, after reports a Hyundai SUV had left the road and rolled, before coming to rest on its roof on nearby grass.

The 20-year-old male driver managed to escape the wreckage however, three passengers – a man and two women from NSW’s south coast – were trapped in the car. All three died at the scene.

It’s believed the group were heading home from Canberra on Sunday afternoon after attending a 21st birthday party, the Daily Mail reports.

One of the first responders told the publication she arrived at the scene and began performing CPR.

“The boy and the girl were already out of the car by the time police were on the scene,” the woman, who was not named, told the Daily Mail.

“We were trying to do CPR on them, but it just wouldn’t work. It was awful.”

The responder said the driver was screaming for others to help his girlfriend who was trapped in the car.

“I can still hear his screams,” she recalled.

The driver was taken to Canberra Hospital with minor injuries. Police said he would undergo mandatory blood tests.

He remains in hospital in a stable condition, as of Tuesday morning, the Daily Mail reports.

No charges have yet been laid.

Hume Police District Commander Superintendent Linda Bradbury told the Goulburn Post the scene was “horrific”.

“Any fatality that police go to is confronting,” Superintendent Bradbury said.

Specialist crash officers attached to the Southern Region Crash Investigation are conducting inquiries.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
