Next Hyundai Santa Fe to be hybrid only

This strong-selling seven-seat wagon has relied on a traditional formula since its launch, but the latest model heads in a different direction.

Hyundai’s all-new Santa Fe is adding new tech, more trim choices and a hybrid-only engine line-up as it ramps up the pressure on large SUV rivals.

Due in dealerships in June, the bolder and boxier new Santa Fe will also usher in a new flagship model to be known as Calligraphy.

That Calligraphy variant will effectively replace the Highlander at the top of the three-tiered line-up and be offered as a seven-seater or more luxurious six-seater with two individual central seats instead of the broader bench typical of a middle row.

All new Santa Fes will have 20-inch wheels, dual 12.3-inch infotainment screens, over-the-air software updates and remote connectivity.

But it’s what’s beneath the bonnet that will give the Santa Fe a point of difference against rivals.

When the new model hits the market, it will initially only be offered with a petrol-electric hybrid set-up.

That could make it the only hybrid-only seven-seater in the family-friendly circa-$60,000 market (Toyota is expected to soon make the rival Kluger hybrid only, although timing is not yet known).

In a market segment where fuel bills can quickly rack up, the Hyundai move will provide some cost-of-living relief as petrol prices soar well past $2.00 a litre for premium fuel.

While Hyundai has previously offered the 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo mated to an electric motor as an all-wheel drive, the new model will also be available in a more affordable front-drive model.

Both produce a combined 172kW and 369Nm and drive through a six-speed auto transmission.

Fuel use is yet to be finalised but is likely to improve slightly over the same basic hybrid system in the current Santa Fe. That means something near 6.0 litres per 100km.

Hyundai hasn’t ruled out other engines down the track, although the diesel that has long been the engine of choice for those wanting to lower their fuel bills is gone for good.
