More than 150 new luxury Kia SUVs are being recalled over fears part of the seatbelt housing could explode and cause serious injury.

The alert was issued for owners of Kia Sorentos manufactured between 2020-22, with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts issuing the urgent warning this week.

About 167 vehicles are affected.

The recall notice states a manufacturing issue could cause the seatbelt pre-tensioner inflator cap to fracture when deployed in the event of an accident.

“If the seatbelt pre-tensioner inflator cap fractures, metal fragments may be propelled at high speed towards the vehicle occupants and could cause serious injury,” the notice states.

Owners of the affected vehicles are urged to contact their local Kia dealer for repair work free of charge.

According to Kia’s website, a pre-tensioner seatbelt ensures the belt fits tightly around the person’s body and tightens in the event of an accident.

It follows a similar recall being issued last week for Maserati customers.

Owners of the MC20 Cielo convertible supercar are being urged to contact their dealership after a fault impacting the windscreen was detected.

“The adhesive that holds the windshield frame in place may not meet manufacturing specifications, this may result in the windshield not being adequately secured to the vehicle,” the notice warned.
