Uber accused of risking passenger safety over fare cuts

Changes to Uber’s prices could have detrimental effects to passengers and drivers on the popular ride-sharing platform.

Uber announces plans to drop fares

Uber drivers have accused the tech giant of putting passenger safety at risk by forcing them to work longer hours following pay cuts.

The ridesharing service had cut fees across the board, hoping customers will take more rides.

As a result, Uber drivers will be paid less for each journey.

Shane Millsom, secretary of the Rideshare Driver Network, says price cuts on the platform will hurt drivers during a cost of living crisis, forcing them “to work longer hours, leading to fatigue and increased risk of accidents on our roads”.

“Rideshare drivers are not faceless businesses; they are human beings who deserve to

be treated with dignity and respect,” Millsom says.

“By denying drivers a fair wage, Uber is not only hurting

individuals but also undermining the Aussie fair go.”

The Rideshare Driver Network says Uber has slashed pay rates by “up to 30 per cent”, in a “crushing blow” that could leave drivers earning “well below minimum wage”.

A spokesman for Uber said it has updated its approach to how fares are calculated.

“As of 21 August, our new fare structure in these cities accounts for multiple factors to ensure we can match riders with the best ride at the best price,” he said.

“Fares are calculated and will vary based on a combination of where a trip starts, the day of the week and the time of day. As always, riders will be able to see the full cost of the fare upfront before requesting a trip. They will also receive a full breakdown of these new fare components in their receipt by email and in-app.

“This new approach will enable Uber to best balance both sides of our marketplace – making sure there are enough drivers in the right places to provide a seamless experience for riders. “As ever, our aim is to continue providing quality, safe and affordable rides for Aussie passengers while creating compelling earnings opportunities for drivers who use our platform.”
