Toyota unveils Sega Rally concept
Turbocharged nostalgia arrives in the form of a rally-inspired coupe classic that could hit showrooms in the future.
You’re going to need more than a couple of gold coins for this one.
Toyota has teased fans of the classic arcade game Sega Rally with a turbocharged take on the latest GR86 sports car.
Built for the SEMA show in Las Vegas, the modified coupe doles out nostalgia with carefully selected features including spotlights, a high rear spoiler and fat rally wheels.
It also wears classic Castrol warpaint found on several famous race cars including the Toyota Celica and Supra, as well as Ford’s Mustang.
Better still, the retro coupe ditched the naturally aspirated 2.4-litre engine of the regular Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ in favour of a turbocharged 1.6-litre three-cylinder engine sourced from the GR Yaris and Corolla.
That’s exactly what fans have been asking for since the original Toyota 86 debuted in 2012.
Naturally, it also pinches the six-speed manual transmission and sophisticated all-wheel-drive system from Toyota’s hot hatch duo.
Modified for racing, the show car has a stripped out interior, racing seat and roll cage.
It shapes up as a modern successor to the Toyota Celica GT-Four, a turbocharged all-wheel-drive rival to Subaru’s WRX.

The Celica has four World Rally Campionships under its belt, as well as three Australian Rally Championship titles.
Toyota has hinted at producing a modern successor to the Celica.
A cartoon recently released by the brand has a list of potential sports cars for the future, including a next-generation Celica, MR2, Supra and GR86.
The new concept car could be further advanced evidence of those plans – after all, the Castrol-clad Celica was the star of the smash hit Sega Rally game of the 1990s.
