Subaru slashes the price of its Solterra electric car
A new zero-emissions SUV from one of the most popular brands in the country has just landed and potential customers are in for a shock.
Subaru has slashed the price of its new electric car before the first vehicle is delivered to customers.
The Subaru Solterra range will now start at $69,990 (before on-road costs), which is $8000 cheaper than when it was first announced in November, 2023.
The range-topping Solterra Touring has had a similarly generous haircut and now starts at $76,990, some $6700 cheaper than before.
It follows a similar move by Ford that slashed $7000 off the price of the similar sized Mustang Mach-E electric SUV.
Subaru’s new price brings it in line with rival machines such as the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Tesla Model Y.
The Japanese maker says the new prices will apply to all existing pre-order customers.
Both Solterra models combine a 71.4kWh lithium-ion battery with dual electric motors serving up a combined 160kW and 337Nm of torque.
The car has 414 kilometres of range when measured using the WLTP test procedure.
All Solterras have all-wheel drive grip and proper ground clearance to make it more capable off the bitumen than most electric cars.
Standard gear includes a 7-inch digital dash, 12.3-inch infotainment screen, 18-inch alloys, LED headlights and heated seats in the front and rear.
Touring models add a 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo, wireless phone charging, 20-inch alloys and a panoramic sunroof.
The car is covered by a five-year, unlimited-kilometre warranty along with an eight-year, 160,000 kilometre guarantee for the high-voltage battery.
Servicing is free for the first five years and five years of roadside assistance is included in every purchase.
Customers can choose to have a basic 7kW single-phase charger installed at their home for $2250, or upgrade to a three-phase 22kW charger for $2645.
The Subaru Solterra was co-developed with Toyota and shares its hardware with the coming Toyota bZ4X – the Japanese giants first electric SUV.
