Suzuki is set to replace the Swift hatchback with a new model.

A “concept car” presented to the public at the 2023 Tokyo motor show paves the road ahead for Suzuki’s affordable small car.

While some concept cars are outlandish machines that look a long way removed from the real world, the Swift appears ready for production.

Suzuki says the concept car is powered by a “high-efficiency engine strikes a balance between driving performance and fuel efficiency”.

The hatchback is rumoured to be offered with hybrid power in the future.

Without giving much away, Suzuki says the new Swift represents “a shift from tangible consumption to experiential consumption”.

Whatever that means, it’s clear the car represents evolution, not revolution.

New safety features bring it into line with modern hatchbacks such as the Toyota Yaris.

A modest cabin swerves around the trend for digital dashboards, employing analog dials wither side of a compact screen.

Similarly, a high-set centrally mounted infotainment screen won’t win awards for its size.

Though that might also mean the Swift stays on the affordable side of the $30,000 mark, remaining affordable to drivers on a budget.

Folks looking forward to a true next-gen Suzuki might want to wait for a production-ready version of the electric eVX concept.

The electric crossover builds on the off-road know-how of the Suzuki Vitara and cult-classic Suzuki Jimny, with four-wheel-drive traction and off-road tech in a much more modern package.

Suzuki says the eVX has about 500 kilometres of electric range, promising it will deliver the “true Suzuki driving experience”.

The eVX has a much more modern cabin than the Swift, offering a yoke-type steering wheel, wide-screen display, and a more open layout typical of electric cars.
