Jeep is preparing to beef up its electric car range with a potent new zero-emissions electric car.

The American brand has revealed the first details of the new Wagoneer S, which is due to enter production later this year.

Initially the electric SUV will be sold in the US, but it is expected to be launched in global markets soon after.

It’ll have eye-popping performance, as its electric motors produce about 445kW, which Jeep says is enough grunt to propel it to 100km/h from a standstill in about 3.5 seconds.

The Wagoneer S will feature a sleek profile to increase range by reducing drag.

LED lights will illuminate the seven slot grille, giving it a futuristic look.

Jeep says the Wagoneer S will be all-wheel drive and have the ability to head off road thanks to its all-terrain management tech.

The Wagoneer S is the latest step in Jeep’s target to become carbon net zero by 2038.

If the Wagoneer arrives in Australia it’ll join the smaller electric Jeep Avenger SUV, which is due to arrive in the latter half of this year.

The Avenger is very compact, measuring a little more than four metres, which is shorter than the Mazda CX-3 and Toyota Yaris Cross SUVs.

Despite this Jeep says it’ll have a surprisingly spacious interior. This is because it is built on an electric-only platform that stores the batteries beneath the floor and removes much of the mechanical hardware used in petrol or diesel cars to free up space.

The pint-sized Avenger will be the brand’s first electric vehicle in Australia.

There is a big 355-litre boot that easily trumps similar sized petrol cars and there is the equivalent of a carry-on bag’s worth of space inside the cabin, too.

The Avenger has a 54kWh battery that provides a driving range of up to 400km. It can accept a max charging rate of 100kW, which is well below the benchmark 350kW delivered by Hyundai and Kia.

A single electric motor makes 115kW and 260Nm, which is delivered to the front wheels.

Jeep hasn’t revealed local prices for the Avenger but in the UK it costs the equivalent of $70,000, which puts it in the same range as the bigger Tesla Model Y.
