Australia’s cheapest car is about to get much more expensive.

MG unveiled sweeping changes to its entry-level car at the Geneva Motor Show this week, revealing fresh looks, a heavily upgraded interior and new safety technology for the new MG3 hatch.

It looks attractive, but a $5000 price rise will sting the back pockets of drivers on a budget.

The current MG3 built a strong following on the back of sub-$20,000 drive-away prices that helped it accelerate past compact cars such as the Mazda2 to become a popular option for drivers looking to save money.

Right now, the MG3 is the only car that you can buy for less than $20,000. It costs $19,990 drive-away in automatic form, undercutting the tiny Kia Picanto sold for $20,690 drive-away as a manual, or $21.690 with an automatic transmission.

But the new model will cost closer to $25,000 drive-away.

An MG Motor Australia spokesman said “MG can confirm that, due to advancements in technology, safety and specification, the new MG3 revealed at the Geneva Motor Show will mean the popular model will no longer be a sub-$20,000 car when it launches in Australia this year”.

“There will be a price increase of around $5000 associated with the new model, thanks to the introduction of new world-class technology, safety updates and all-new specification,” he said.

“The current MG3 is at the end of its life cycle which means that now is the best time to buy a brand-new car for the price of a used one, before the new model hits our shores.

“More details will be shared closer to the local launch later this year.”

The new model’s fresh styling accompanies a more attractive interior home to a wide-screen central display, flat-bottomed steering wheel and electronic parking brake.

It has the driver assistance technology missing from the outgoing MG3 hatchback, including auto emergency braking and active cruise control features.

A new hybrid engine under the bonnet promises to help reduce fuel bills.

European models use 4.4L/100km to produce a strong 143kW of power.

MG also unveiled a spin-off brand called IM Motors in Geneva.

The “Intelligent Mobility” brand aims to take on electric cars such as the Tesla Model 3 and BYD Seal with an attractive sedan.

Full details for the machine have not been confirmed, nor has an Australian debut for the new luxury machine from MG.

But it joins the MG Cyberster electric convertible in a growing range of models that reflect the company’s ambition to take on established brands in a variety of segments.
