Transportation safety officers have issued an urgent recall for 1983 Mercedes-Benz vehicles, warning a manufacturing defect in some of the luxury brand’s models poses a serious safety risk to road users.

Certain of the company’s AMG GT, C-Class, E-Class, S-Class, SL, CLE, EQE and EQS models were recalled on Monday following the discovery of a manufacturing defect.

“Vehicle management systems connected to the fuse box may fail,” the Australian government’s Department of Transport stated in its recall alert.

“If this occurs, it may lead to a sudden loss of motive power and/or a vehicle fire.

“A sudden loss of motive power while driving, or a vehicle fire, could increase the potential risk of an accident, causing serious injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users, bystanders and damage to property.”

The year range for affected vehicles is 2023-24.

Consumers are advised to check their vehicle identification numbers to see if they have been affected and, if so, to contact their nearest authorised Mercedes-Benz dealership to have the fuse box replaced.

The replacement will be free of charge.

Mercedes-Benz is a premier luxury brand and its S-Class sedans have come to typify the luxury driving experience, with the refined cars selling for more than $200,000.

Mercedes-Benz has been contacted for comment.
