VISITORS at this month’s Wimmera Machinery Field Days had to retreat a few steps to take in the eye-watering size of Goldacres’ latest giant broadacre boom, on show for the first time in Victoria.
The all-new TriTech 48m boom, two years in development, has been engineered for Goldacres’ self-propelled G8 Super Cruiser and trailing 8500-litre Prairie Pro sprayers.
With all sections open, total working width is 48m, but with the outer and middle sections folded back, that can be reduced to 36m and 20m.
Using a lightweight trussed construction of steel and aluminium and advanced hydraulics for precise yaw and breakaway control, the boom also gives operators the ability to run a mix of nozzle combinations.
Sales and marketing operations manager Stephen Richards said the company could now offer boom sizes from three-nozzle up to 48m.
“We’re the only Australian manufacturer of booms, while other equipment of comparable size uses a Pommier boom imported from France,” Mr Richards said.
“However, we wanted to persevere with the tri-folding design and keep all our nozzles in perfect alignment along a single spray bar.
“The plumbing on the boom is increased to one-inch poly tubing, which reduces pressure drop and provides more even nozzle flow rates.
“In Australia, farmers like to sit on 25-30km/h when spraying, whereas in Europe it’s done at 6km/h to be more intensive. We cover massive areas, so people want to go fast.
“The boom has to hold together under those kinds of speeds, so it’s a completely different boom to our 36m version.
“The three-way suspension system dampens the forces of pitch, yaw and roll, with hydraulic breakaways in each section, so if the boom hits something it will break away and not suffer damage.
“We’ve sold one particular G8 with 48m boom attached to a customer at St George in Queensland and it’s suited to that kind of open flat country.
“At 48m, you need a big paddock to unfold it all.”
Pricing for an 8500-litre Prairie Pro with 48m boom is about $250,000, while the boom itself as an option costs about $130,000 (both prices exclude GST).
