THE 47th Wandin-Silvan Field Days, to be held in the heart of the Yarra Valley, will have exhibitors present a diverse range of horticultural, agricultural and lifestyle products and services.
Visitors will see general farm machinery, light industrial equipment, cars and motorbikes through to irrigation equipment, water tanks, pest and weed control, fertilisers, chemicals, and fruit packaging and labelling.
Field days president, William Anker says the focus of the event is to offer a “forum for local and national businesses to gain exposure, with exhibitors able to showcase and present new innovations and techniques making way on to the market”.
“Local farmers and primary producers can inspect the latest in farming technology and talk directly to experts from the country’s leading suppliers,” he said.
The Wandin-Silvan Field Days is a not-for-profit organisation run by a committee of local volunteers, some of whom were at the first event.
“The field days fosters community involvement with local schools and community groups providing catering and other services as their major fundraising opportunity,” Mr Anker said.
In keeping with that community spirit, among the highlights this year will be students from Mount Lilydale Mercy College’s Young Farmers club showcasing their skills demonstrating a range of fencing equipment from Rural Fence and Trade.
The students will also be running a pet show on the Saturday, which is open to children under the age of 18 to enter their own animal. Pony rides for the children, a mobile animal farm and displays of Galloway cattle. Therapy chickens in aged and child care also follow the animal theme.
Black Snake Productions is back with an educational interactive display and talks from its Snake Pit where Taipans, brown snakes, tiger snakes, death adders, pythons, lizards and a croc make an appearance.
The General Interest marquee will feature local products and demonstrations of cottage industries.
For those who love the machinery of yesteryear, the Yarra Valley Machinery Preservation Society will have a working presentation and display.
There is also a photo competition focusing on farm history with cash prizes totalling $750 on offer.
