AUSTRALIAN champion drone pilot Thomas Bitmatta hopes to add another trophy to his collection in a championship race at Seymour Expo.
AUSTRALIAN champion drone pilot Thomas Bitmatta hopes to add another trophy to his collection in a championship race at Seymour Expo on Sunday, February 17.
The 19-year-old prodigy from Melbourne’s north has more than six international titles in the fast and furious sport of first person view drone racing.
The emerging sport sees competitors navigate drones through gates and around obstacles at as much as 120km/h.
“It is similar to car racing,” Thomas explains. “You have heads-up racing with multiple drones at once.”
Thomas also tests development drones for manufacturers and said the rising popularity of drone racing helped advance technology for drones in other industries.
Race organiser Dave Purebred said the event will attract up to 30 pilots. Visitors can try flying drones at sessions over the three-day expo.
