Eight new standout Hereford sires have been added to the Hereford Australia’s Super Sire program.

Four new studs will also feature on the latest update to the Super Sire program which was launched in 2018 with just one bull, Wirruna Matty M288, who has gone on to prove himself in several stud and commercial herds around Australia.

The rapid expansion of the program this year now highlights a total of 22 young Hereford sires, with the eight newcomers recently added to the catalogue of 14 super sires featured last year.

Herefords Australia Technical Committee chairman and Days Whiteface stud principal Lachy Day is one of the four new studs welcomed to the program with his bull, Days Godfather.

The bull is set to sell as lot 1 in the upcoming Days Whiteface autumn bull sale which last year topped at $40,000 to average $10,978 for 46 of 47 bulls sold.

“He is 21-month-old and out of our number one cow, so he offers predictability on the dam side and outcross genetics on the sire side which makes him a pretty interesting bull,” Lachy said.

He said he was excited to be part of the program which identifies bulls with superior performance on BreedPlan, in particular for the Estimated Breeding Values of calving ease, growth and carcass.

“It’s good to see that bulls from a number of different herds are qualifying for the program.

“The fact that there are quite a number of studs that are hitting these targets means there is going to be a more diverse range of top genetics,” Lachy said.

A Warwick Court sire is also among the new recruits with bull, Warwick Court Quick.

Warwick Court stud principal Bob Holdsworth said the call came as a bit of a surprise as the bull has just sold in their recent dispersal sale for $12,500.

The Holdsworths dispersed their 40-year breeding institution last November to move into retirement.

“I was really pleased but I thought (the call) could have come a few weeks earlier,” Bob joked.

“He was the top-priced poll bull in our sale,” he said.

“We’ve used him twice in two seasons as a heifer bull in our poll herd.”
