Yea store cattle sale: top steer and heifer prices

Buyers flocked to the Yea store cattle sale where weaners and calves made “exceptional money”. See which farmers made the most.

A rainy day saw buyers flock to the Yea store sale today with the crowd size rivalling that of the January feature sales.

With both local restockers and a full contingent of feedlot buyers present, rapid fire bids saw the sale move quickly through the 2200 head of cattle yarded.

The heavier end of the steers eased slightly on previous sales, with most from 500kg to 600kg and above making around 549c/kg to 550c/kg.

However, following on from the heavier lots, medium weight and quality weaner steers and calves made exceptional money, bolstered by the large crowd with local restockers out in full force.

Ginnung East farm manager Ross Girdwood achieved a top price of $2920 (564c/kg) for 38 Angus steers weighing 518kg.

The sale was highlighted by a number of feature lines of cattle including one from Ginnung East at Ghin Ghin, who sold 105 Angus steers in total.

The heifer market saw much the same trends as the steers with the heavier end easing slightly while the restocking types sold to strong competition.

A standout line of Angus heifers offered by Theaden Pastoral sold exceptionally well, topping at $2310 or 636c/kg for 32 at 363kg. They also returned close to $7/kg for another pen of 36 Angus at 308kg which made $2140 or 695c/kg.
