Myrtleford tops Mountain Calf Sales

In Myrtleford’s biggest ever offering of weaners, prices were judged dearer than the high country sales, with numbers pushing past $1300 for steers.

Myrtleford’s biggest offering ever of weaners has seen prices break 400c/kg as the centre’s annual autumn sales produce strong results.

In a sale of 2200 weaner and some older cattle, prices were judged dearer than the famed mountain calf sales held earlier this week.

Plenty of pens broke the $1200 mark and a number pushed past $1300 for steers around the 400kg liveweight mark.

And several commission buyers were very active with Andrew Lowe dominant on heavier pens of Angus steers and heifers.

In cents a kilogram terms, cattle did get dearer as they got lighter and it was a pen of black baldy September-drop steers, 220kg, that earned the highest price at 407c/kg, selling for $895.

Tony Kirk from Barwidgee Creek sold Angus steer weaners to $1330.

Tony Kirk from Barwidgee Creek sold three pens of Angus steer weaners which topped at $1330 for 338kg, making 393c/kg.

Mr Kirk said he thought his steers may not make as much given their lower weight, but there was little difference in his price compared to steers, which were up to 70kg heavier.

Heifer prices were considered on a par with other centres making 250-280c/kg liveweight though some dipped lower.

Greg Ivone from Havilah sold Black Simmental Angus steers for $1390 or 350c/kg at the Myrtleford weaner sale.
