Poll Dorsets: Don McKinnon preps Derby Downs stud for sheep and wool show

Don McKinnon’s Derby Downs stud has won broad ribbons before, but success at this year’s sheep show would be something special. Here’s why.

The influence of Poll Dorset genetics in the prime lamb world is not lost on breed stalwart Don McKinnon.

One of the earlier converts to the polled version, he has seen the breed become one of the most dominant players in prime lamb operations across Australia.

So he is proud sheep from his Derby Downs stud, run at Marong, will be some of those lining up at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show next month.

It should be an impressive sight, Mr McKinnon said, to see some of Australia’s best Poll Dorset genetics compete to take the broad ribbons.

And he knows all about being at the top end of the line-up.

About 20 years ago, Derby Downs had back-to-back wins as the supreme champion Poll Dorset sheep and to achieve this “means everything”.

“Showing sheep allows the sheep industry to recognise correct structure, shape and muscle,” Mr McKinnon said.

“It is a significant privilege to be nominated as the feature breed at Bendigo and it is up to us as breeders to support this.”

His own team will include up to six rams and two ewes, carefully selected to maximise his chances of performing well.

Yet it’s not all about winning.

Mr McKinnon said the friendships created through the world of showing, combined with the ability to share ideas, made the efforts to get sheep ready worthwhile.

The Australian Sheep and Wool runs from July 14-16 and about 200 entries are ­expected for the Poll Dorset feature. Entries close on Friday, June 23.
