New to farming but straight to top for Jackson Brinin

With less than a year of farming under his belt, Jackson Brinin has shown he’s chosen the right career as he rises to top of junior judging.

Jackson Brinin from Condobolin, NSW, won the junior judging at the Hay Sheep Show at Hay, NSW, over the weekend and also gained the encouragement award after graduating from Hay Inc.

He may have grown up in Brisbane but Jackson Brinin was always going to be involved in agriculture.

And in a credible feat, the 22-year-old just won the junior judging at the Hay Sheep Show even though he has only been working with livestock for less than a year.

Jackson also took home the encouragement award at the graduation of Hay Inc over the weekend in recognition of his willingness to learn more.

It’s been a stellar rise for the self-confessed city bloke who has carefully planned his entry into agriculture.

“I wanted to be able to offer something to anyone employing me in the agriculture sector, and a needed a skill that could be helpful, so I became a qualified welder,” Jackson said.

After five years of applying the trade, he took up his first chance in farming on a mixed cropping and sheep property with 4000 Merinos at Condobolin, NSW, earlier this year.

And he hasn’t looked back.

Jackson wanted to be part of the Hay Inc training program, which provides learning to jackeroos and young people starting in agriculture, to gain skills but also to gain connections in the livestock world.

“I knew that I did not know anything, so came into the program with 100 per cent commitment to listen and to learn,” he said.

“There was more to life than sitting in a shed welding and I wanted to be outside, working.”

Jackson hopes more sheep work will be in his future and more learning about livestock.

“Doing Hay Inc has encouraged me and taught me so much,” he said.
