New grass fed cattle body is more than just a name change

Cattle Australia is on track to be the new voice of grass-fed beef producers across the nation.

Australian grass-fed cattle producers are edging closer to having a new peak body with Cattle Australia now calling for members to apply.

There is more to the new entity than just a tweaking of the name from the former body Cattle Council of Australia, which is overseeing the transition process.

The new constitution is now in its final review and one of its key planks is that board and policy council will be democratically elected by all members rather than appointed through state farming organisations.

Anyone wanting to stand as a representative director must be an individual member of Cattle Australia. All current members of Cattle Council Australia will automatically become individual members of Cattle Australia.

Those producers who register to vote and become a member will be able to participate in the board election process in November.

Cattle Australia implementation committee member Geoff Pearson said it was an exciting time for the industry.

“A new peak body offering inclusion, producer representation and strong advocacy is within reach,” said Mr Pearson.

“I encourage all eligible producers to sign up to have their say on the future of the grass-fed sector.”

Current CCA president Lloyd Hick said a strong membership base was critical for the new body “to deliver on its vision of a strong and secure grass-fed cattle industry”.

“Cattle Australia will develop policy and advocate for all grass-fed cattle producers,” Mr Hick said.

“It represents grass-fed producers paying the Cattle Transaction Levy and needs their input.

“With challenges such as foot and mouth disease on our doorstep, it’s vital we are united.

“Cattle Australia will bring us together to tackle challenges and take advantage of opportunities.”
