Moderate frame and heavy muscle in the one package earned the highest prices at the Limousin National Show and Sale at Holbrook, NSW, today.

The offering of bulls, females and genetic packages topped at $20,000 for a 26-month-old bull, while a young heifer sold for $10,000 and embryos sold to $1200 each.

Show and sale committee chairman Garry Hedger from Garren Park Genetics at Culcairn, NSW, said the results were pleasing especially given the breed had sold a larger number of bulls last year.

“It’s a good thing that Limousin bulls have longevity and many people are still using sires when they are seven or even eight years old,” Mr Hedger said.

“The flip side is that this sometimes means demand for new bulls is softened if we had big sales a year ago.”

The sale topper was Balamara Rare Gem Stone, a homozygous poll black bull which had figures of 1.1 for birthweight +66 for docility, had scanned figures of 143 centimetres for eye muscle area.

The bull, bred by Michael Marno from the Balamara Limousin Stud in Brazier, Western Australia, sold to the Eckermann family, Aruma Limousins, Korunye, South Australia.

The highest priced female was Summit Light-Ice S14, a 12-month-old apricot poll heifer from Hadyen and Jasmine Green’s Summit Limousin stud at Uranquinty, NSW. The heifer, which had been judged junior and then grand champion female at the show and sale fixture, was unjoined and sold to Mick and Mary Parsons, Kia Ora Limousins, Crookwell, NSW.

Mr Hedger said moving the national event from Wodonga to Holbrook had been a success, with a big crowd not daunted by attending a fixture in a smaller country town.

“We had used Wodonga for many years so we were the guinea pigs in lots of ways getting a national sale going in Holbrook, but I think it has great merit and the reaction has been really positive,” he said.
