Lawsons Angus spring sale sale results: Top price $130k

The top price bull at Lawson Angus spring sale sold for $130,000 and was snapped up by a syndicate of buyers – including local and interstate.

A huge top price of $130,000 was achieved at the Lawson Angus Spring bull sale at Yea today.

Sale topper Lawsons Rocky sold to a syndicate of well-known Angus stud heavyweights which included Gilmandyke Angus, NSW, Dunoon Angus, NSW, Knowla Livestock, BSW and Kelly Angus at Yea.

Stud manager for Kelly Angus Patrick Joyce said the syndicate identified the yearling bull “quite early on” as his scanned data came in a couple of months ago.

“It’s quite a unique genetic combination and very strong – there’s no other bull really around that’s quite like him with that carcass data,” Mr Joyce said.

In a very Covid-typical situation, Lawson Angus stud principal Harry Lawson said it was an unusual feeling selling “the best bull we’ve ever bred” without ever having laid eyes on him.

Lawsons Rocky was the first bull to sell of the 26 on offer from the Lawson blood co-operative herd run by Vince Rheinberger at Boorowa, NSW.

“Objectively he’s the best balanced bull that has come up in searches for calving ease, high growth, moderate cow size and is off the charts carcass-wise,” Mr Lawson said.

“He just combines a perfect set of figures with phenotype as well.”

Overall, the on-property auction held at Yea today sold 98 yearling bulls running both at Yea and Boorowa, NSW to full clearance for an average of $10,795 – up $2210 from last years average of $8585 for 77 bulls sold.
