JBS: Meat giant sets sight on Australian pork processing plant
A global meat giant is eyeing off pork processing in Australia. Here’s what we know.
One of the world’s biggest meat processing companies is set to acquire an Australian pork processing plant as part of a multi-million dollar deal.
Brazilian company JBS recently announced plans to acquire 100 per cent of Rivalea Holdings Pty Ltd, along with 100 per cent of Oxdale Dairy Enterprise Pty Ltd.
The combined value of both purchases totals AU$175 million.
Rivalea, based in the NSW Riverina, processed about 26 per cent of Australian hogs.
JBS Global chief executive Gilberto Tomazoni said the sale would allow JBS to become “a leader in pork processing in Australia”.
“We will add important brands to our portfolio to create strong conditions to accelerate the growth of the value-added and branded businesses in the country, in addition to strengthening our export platform”, Mr Tomazoni said.
According to a statement released by JBS, the Rivalea purchase will allow the company to increase volumes of value added pork meat products under the Primo banner, as well as open new opportunities for domestic and export pork sales.
JBS Australia chief executive Brent Eastwood said Rivalea has annual sales worth AU$400 million.
“The company sells well-known Australian consumer brands such as Riverview Farms, Family Chef and St. Bernard’s that will strengthen our presence with consumers and customers,” Mr Eastwood said.
The purchase is subject to regulatory approvals.
