Iconic Brahman stud sells in the ‘deal of the century’

The “deal of a century” has led to the Carinya Brahman herd moving to a Collinsville farming family, who hope to maintain the stud’s breeding history.

The “deal of a century” has led to an iconic Queensland Brahman stud herd moving in its entirety to a new family.

The Carinya Brahman herd has been secured by Collinsville farmers Gavin and Dillon Scott, who have high hopes of maintaining the stud’s 70-year breeding history.

The purchase price was confidential, but Elders described it as “one (of the) largest sale transactions in decades”. It included 730 registered females, all number four and five replacement heifers, 12 breeding sires and all semen and embryo stocks.

Matt Kirk said the family had focused on fertility, weight for age, and breeding “good commercial cattle”.

“If you do this game properly, you’re seriously invested in all facets and to me, Brahmans I believe are the hardest breed of cattle there is to breed but they can also be the most rewarding,” Mr Kirk said.

“When the last one goes through the ring it’ll be an average feeling, but by the same token there’s a same weight lifted off my shoulders and the kids’.”

He said they would continue selling Brahman bulls for the next two years after breeding “the best (they’ve) bred”. Meanwhile, they will continue with their Ticoba Simbrah and Simmental stud, with a sale on August 28.

The next Carinya Brahman sale would be on October 29.

“This decision was made by our entire family, there’s also an element of succession planning, the next generation can choose their own paths, they’re not restrained, we still have all our properties, and our Simmental/Simbrah operation,” Mr Kirk said.

Elders livestock agent Anthony Ball said the stud had moved from “one tremendous family” to another, which showed confidence in the Brahman market.

“It’s the deal of the century, it’s big news in Queensland and big news in the Brahman world because they’re such a well-known stud,” he said.

“The Scott family are very big Brahman enthusiasts, they’re very good operators so the stud has gone to a very good home.”

Mr Ball approached Collinsville farmers Gavin and Dillon Scott about the purchase, who said they saw it as an opportunity to secure cattle that are “second to none”.

“It’s not every day an opportunity like this magnitude comes along and we’re committed to preserving the legacy of the stud, the cattle,” Mr Scott said.

They hoped to offer bulls at future Brahman Week events and by private negotiation.
