Hamilton Sheepvention 2023: Suffolk in the spotlight
Suffolk sheep are the feature breed at the 2023 Sheepvention — with hundreds set to flock to the two-day event in Hamilton this weekend.
Charcoal-faced and subtly muscular, Suffolks are rarely featured on coins or coffee table books like the much-vaunted Merino.
But the Sunday roast staple will get its moment in the spotlight this weekend as Sheepvention 2023 leads the bountiful breed to centre stage.
Beeac farmers Pia Cotter, husband Brenton O’Rourke and son Flynn will be three of many Suffolk stalwarts at the Hamilton event.
The family have bred Suffolks for the past 15 years and showcased their stock at Sheepvention for nearly as long.
“Suffolks have a lot to recommend them. They’re a generally docile breed; they’re consistent and reliable in terms of fertility,” Ms Cotter said.
“The perform particularly well in wet conditions, so this winter has been ideal for them.”
Founder of Fletcher International Exports and industry veteran Roger Fletcher will officially launch 2023 Sheepvention on Sunday afternoon.
More than 500 sheep have been entered this year’s sheep show with a dozen breeds represented.
While the Suffolk has gained pride of place as the 2023 feature breed — the Ile De France breed will also be put through its paces for the first time.
More than 70 rams will feature in the Monday Ram Sale while a Careers In Ag Day will highlight the opportunities for prospective primary producers in southwest Victoria and further afield.
“Sheepvention has always been a great opportunity to showcase the work you’ve out in over the past 12 months,” Ms Cotter said.
“There’s the latest information about innovation in the industry but it’s also a good chance to catch up.”
