EYCI falls 34c/kg in last week of sales before Christmas shutdown

The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator has lost more ground but is stabilising before the end of year shutdown. See the latest.

The benchmark Eastern Young Cattle Indicator is stablilising in the last week of sales for the year and closed at 534 cents a kilogram carcass weight on December 18, 2023.

While this is a drop of 367c/kg carcass weight compared to the same time in 2022, it is still in positive territory for the past month, with rates 83c/kg higher.

But it’s lost 34c/kg in the past week with the rolling seven-day average calculated from an offering of 18,000 cattle.

The EYCI, calculated by Meat and Livestock Australia, is the key price guide for restocker, processor and feedlot buyers, and sellers.

Precisely, it is from the seven-day moving average price for C2 and C3 vealers and yearlings at major cattle markets in NSW, Victoria and Queensland.
