Bull prices: Lawson Angus bull sale sees decent returns at Yea

Consistency was key at Yea for Lawson’s bull sale, which saw a decent price lift for the 94 bulls that sold.

Consistency was key for the Lawson spring bull sale today, which saw a $2000 average price lift and $25,000 top at Yea today.

In total, 94 bulls sold to full clearance to a top of $25,000 and average of $12,885 – up $2090 from their spring sale average last year where 98 yearling bulls averaged $10,795.

The line-up included 31 yearling bulls on offer from the Lawson blood co-operative herd run by Vince Rheinberger at Boorowa NSW.

The $25,000 top-priced bull was the second lot of the day to sell.

He boasted figures in the top 1 per cent of the breed for heavy grain index and EMA, and is in the top 5 per cent for IMF.

“We’re not into individual bulls, we’re about population genetics and providing consistent gain,” stud principal Harry Lawson said about the modest top-price of the sale.

While still impressive, the Lawson Home Town bull was a long way short of the Lawson Rocky Hill, which topped Lawson’s spring sale last year at a huge $130,000.

TRT Pastoral Group continued their large investment into Lawson genetics, purchasing 10 yearling bulls from the Victorian portion of the offering for an average of $11,000.

TRT Pastoral runs three commercial herds at their properties across Tasmania and Mansfield.

The 10 bulls they picked up today will head to TRT’s relatively new operation at Woolnorth in Tasmania with property manager Cody Whiteman, who also attended the sale.

Managing director Tim Roberts-Thomson has been buying Lawson bulls for around five years now and managed to pick up a son of their bull Lawson Miraculous, which they purchased two years ago.

“We look to their IMF, 500 and 600-day growth and calving ease stats when buying – all those figures are important to us,” Mr Roberts-Thomson said.

The Woolnorth property is currently running around 3000 females and will expand rapidly with pregnancy tested in calf heifers joining the herd each year.

“This year we’ll need about 80 odd bulls to service them and we’re starting off with Lawson and Landfall bloodlines down there,” Mr Roberts-Thomson said.

The sale also attracted a large online audience with 22 active bidders active on 66 lots of the sale, and successfully buying 31 bulls in total via the online selling platform AuctionsPlus.
