Life lessons learned out on the farm

This five-year-old may only see her twin poddy lambs as pets right now. But her Mum knows they’re teaching her big life lessons along the way.

Georgia, five, and Hannah Moore, three, have been busily looking after their family’s twin poddy lambs – Twinkletoes and Spot Dot – at their hobby farm near Lancefield.

And the responsibility is teaching them a lot about life and the realities of looking after an animal, their mother Marie Moore says.

“Initially, they were very involved with the feeding and things like that … now we’re a couple of weeks down the track and the excitement has died down,” Marie said.

“But in the early days, it very much kept them going.”

The Moores have lived at Lancefield for the past seven years, and have a number of Black Suffolk Dorset cross lambs on property.

It’s a lifestyle both Marie and husband Ben wanted for their children as they grew up regionally.

“Ben’s background is from NSW and his family are sheep farmers from way back. I grew up on a small hobby farm, and was always looking after animals,” Marie said.

“We wanted the same for our family, and the responsibility for having to keep an eye on water, on food, and also thinking about life and death they’re witness to.”
