Gerogery: Pub meal challenge proving a hit with patrons

A small pub north of Albury is serving up meal challenges of epic proportions, with the ultimate test to demolish a 1kg steak.

Australians warned iconic pub schnitzel could cost up to $40

A small pub north of Albury is hitting the spot for those hungry to test themselves on a 1kg rump steak, double-stacked chicken parmigiana or five-patty burger.

The challenge of devouring the meals in under an hour has put the Gerogery Hotel on the map for those prepared to tackle the tasty offerings.

Each meal comes with a mountain of chips and salad and publican Norm Carl holds the record for all three meals.

He devoured the 1kg rump and sides in 8 minutes, 34 seconds; the burger in 9 minutes, 20 seconds; and the parma in 13 minutes, 37 seconds.

“I like big meals and thought I’d introduce them here,” he said.

“A lot of these things are temporary in nature and you just go with it while it’s working and change it up when it finishes.

“We haven’t had any professional eaters come in yet, but we’ve been messaged by a couple.

“That might happen pretty soon and they will make those times look pedestrian I’m sure.”

Steaks are sourced from Culcairn butcher Stu Weily with 30 challengers lining up at the weekend for the $50 ultimate taste test.

“We’ve done more during a week, but we got absolutely smashed,” Mr Carl said.

“We were turning people away and it’s hard to know how many to stock.”

The challenge is heavily promoted on social media with before and after photos of those prepared to have a crack, contributing to its sustained popularity.

“People can see what the challenge is and it’s just gone crazy,” Mr Carl said.

The prize for completing the challenge is a “G-Rodge” limited edition stubby holder.
