Line dancing for the love of it

Chuck your cowboy boots on and take to the dance floor as line dancing takes the community by storm.

Tropical boots has grown to become one of the most popular line dancing groups in Townsville all thanks to its founder and lifetime cowboy boogie enthusiast, Trent Duncan.

Mr Duncan moved up to Townsville from the Hunter Valley in New South Wales three years ago and has since spread his choreography skills and passion for line dancing around Queensland.

His love for boot scootin’ stemmed from a captivating moment when he was a child that set his dance career on a direct path.

“I started 30 years ago when I was roughly 13 years old,” Mr Duncan said.

“We went out to dinner for my cousin’s birthday at the local bowling club and they had a line dancing party on and we sort of just were watching it and I was just mesmerised and both me and mum decided we would get up and give it a go.”

He began attending classes straight away with his mum before going on to compete at 15-years-old.

“It was that creative channel for me as a kid, and I really enjoyed the music, and I enjoyed the people that were around because it was always very energetic,” he said.

After positive results in competitions he began to put his own spin on line dancing steps with his choreography of Shania Twain’s ‘Man I feel like a Woman’, and Luke Comb’s ‘Where the Wild Things are’ gaining international popularity.

Since moving to Townsville the response for Tropical Boots has been overwhelmingly positive, with many members finding a sense of community while learning new skills.

“The thing about line dancing in comparison to a lot of other dance styles that are out there is that you can get up and do any dance to any piece of music basically,” Mr Duncan said.

“When I moved to Townsville I went to line dancing and I got to meet people. and I’ve met some great people through that and made some great friends.”

Working closely with country music artists such as Golden Guitar winner Katrina Burgoyne and Townsville’s own star Josie to choreograph dances since moving north, helping to widen the horizons of dance possibilities.

Classes run on a Monday from 7.15pm and Wednesday night from 6pm, for more information head to the Tropical Boots website.
