Here’s a rundown of what’s happening near you this week.

Oktoberfest...in September

Traditionally, Oktoberfest starts in the third weekend in September and ends on the first Sunday of October. This year Oktoberfest runs from the 22nd September to 7th October in Munich, and we’re celebrating the weekend before here in Sydney!

Taking place at the beautiful Doltone House, Australian Technology Park, Eveleigh, this incredible building rivals the great Bavarian beer halls of Germany, and will play host to the most traditional Oktoberfest event Sydney has seen, with German oompah bands, folk dancing, on-stage comps and an atmosphere that is guaranteed to be electric.

Sunrise Island

Sunrise Island is a wonderland for the ambitious. Be inspired and learn what it takes to make it in the startup game. Meet your next co-founder, employer, employee, investor or mate. Hear talks from some of our best thinkers. Solve problems and overcome challenges at our small, tactical workshops.As in previous years, Blackbird’s Sunrise conference will host some of the country’s greatest entrepreneurs. Speakers will take you on the startup journey, from the spark of an idea, to overcoming obstacles, challenges and doubt, all the way to scaling. And this year, Travellers to Sunrise Island will be led through an interactive wonderland, choosing from over 40 Zambesi workshops giving up to the minute practical advice on everything startup from the people who are in the thick of it right now. Marvel at the wonders of the universe

View planets’ moons, binary stars, star clusters, nebulae and bright galaxies through Macquarie University’s in-dome telescopes. Held on Monday and Friday nights each week and staffed by the Association for Astronomy, the university's department of physics and astronomy, he team will help you observe the cosmos with your own eyes.

The sessions run from 7pm to 8.30pm or 8pm to 9.30pm at the university's astronomical observatory which can be accessed via Gymnasium Road, Macquarie Park. Adults $15, children and concession $10 and a family of four is $45. Children under five are free. The observing session is limited to 40 people.

Seniors keeping fit

An eight week low-cost outdoor resistance training program for seniors and retirees is being held on Mondays and Wednesdays in Meadowbank Park. The Active in Ryde program is a City of Ryde initiative. The same event also runs in Pioneer Park, Marsfield on a Thursday each week. Sessions run until the week of September 19, from 9.30am to 10.30am

Unique war perspective

It’s your last chance to see the State Library of NSW travelling exhibition Satire in the time of war, 1914-1918. Held at Gladesville Library, the collection of original drawings by renowned Australia political cartoonist Hal Eyre produced during World War I.
