The foods we crave at night

WE'VE all been there. It’s midnight, you’re starving, and a bowl of soggy cereal just ain’t gonna cut it. You keep opening and closing the fridge, hoping something tasty will miraculously appear…but, lo and behold, it does not.

We’ve all been there. It’s midnight, you’re starving, and a bowl of soggy cereal just ain’t gonna cut it. You keep opening and closing the fridge, hoping something tasty will miraculously appear…but, lo and behold, it does not.

22” Pizza First, and not surprisingly, is that classic midnight meal —the pizza. Late at night, this Italian delicacy is ordered in droves, and at 22” in size, too. That’s the equivalent of almost 4 x 12” pizzas, with each slice about the size of a dinner plate. While house parties packed with people seem to be the obvious culprit, the grand 22” pizza could also be tackled alone on a particularly emotional eve, with plenty of leftovers to enjoy the next day. Also, the bigger the pizza, the thicker the layer of pepperoni. Just saying. Gelato/Ice Cream The idea of gelato or ice cream by delivery may raise a few eyebrows. The most common misconception is that they might melt on the way over, but it’s transported in freezer bags to stop such a tragedy occurring. To be honest, this is probably the last thing someone who needs ice cream so late at night is worried about. More pertinent questions include: How many flavours should I order? Should any of them be fruit-based? Should all of them be chocolate? And finally, how quickly can it get here? The answers to those questions are: many, no, yes and pretty quickly, actually. A large percentage of food delivery orders for ice cream and gelato come from late night eaters looking to put their sweet tooth to bed after forgoing dessert while they were out. In Australia, the ice cream business is booming, with gelato making waves thanks to its soft texture and lower fat content. Burgers and fries Just try and name a more iconic food duo. The American classic combo is a favourite menu item in daylight hours, especially for those looking to lay an extra lining on their stomachs. Also, there are so many ways to enjoy this order—be it a cheeseburger, bacon burger, classic burger or chicken burger, with shoestring fries, thick cut fries, waffle fries, sweet potato fries. The possibilities are truly endless. Fried Chicken A staple in the Southern States of the US, Fried Chicken is deep-fried, battered goodness that can be devoured on its own or sandwiched between two halves of a fluffy bun. At its best, it’s crispy and well-seasoned, and at its worst, it’s oily and plain. At 1am in the morning though, it’s just delicious. Fried Chicken is one of those late night picks that you will never experience order regret with. In fact, once your brain gets the message delivered that you’re waiting on a bucket of tender chicken or a delicious fried chicken sandwich, all bets are off. The only thing worse than not ordering it, is the cruel wait for its delivery. Try downing a jug of water until you hear the doorbell—you’ll thank us in the morning.
