While The Australian Turf Club prides itself on matching the elegance of racing with the beauty of fashion, it’s also important to factor in dress codes, current trends and seasonal styles when choosing your Spring Racing showstopper.
Autumn racing is commonly known for its heavier textures, ornate headpieces and richer hues, with the sensation of spring introducing its very own set of guidelines for the new season. Not sure what to wear in the warmer months? From feminine fabrics to pastel hues, here’s how to get Spring Racing ready.
FABRIC
Textured tweed, vintage velvets and layered leather emphasised last season’s chicness while playing to the Autumn Racing dress codes. For spring, swap out the heavier fabrics for sheer florals, lighter lace and feminine frills, which add to the romance of the racing season.
COLOUR
Deeper, richer hues set off the cooler season, with emerald, fuchsia and navy in the spotlight. For spring, trade in darker hues for more feminine favourites– pinks and pastels contrasted with bold, eclectic prints and not-so-obvious shades such as blocks of blue, green and yellow will help you stand out of the crowd.
SHAPE
Unlike the Autumn Racing Carnival, spring desires floatier, feminine styles. Leave structured silhouettes at home, with the warmer weather calling upon whimsical and weightless fabrics for the new season. Frocks are not necessarily favoured, with separates and jumpsuits perfect go-to options for the racing season.
HEADWEAR
While we embraced the luxe, autumn tradition of leather and feathers, the new season sees wide straw hats, big boaters and bold turbans take centre stage. Fabrics that breathe well on warmer days are important, with lace and veiling considered classic styles to wear.
ACCESSORIES
Gloves, fishnet stockings and toe-cap heels all made an impact this autumn. Swap out the bigger, bolder accessories for seasonal pieces such as statement silk scarves, odd earrings, embroidered clutches or nautical boaters. When pairing sunnies with your ensemble, keep an eye out for retro aviators, stylish cat eyes or coloured lenses for something a little bit different.
