Make Your Bedroom Cosy This Winter With These Simple Tips
This winter we have some simple tips to make sure that your chilled-out, wound-down feeling doesn’t head straight to the south pole when you open the door to your bedroom.
Experts say we will sleep better if we wind down before bedtime in a warm, relaxed atmosphere, consume no coffee after three o’clock, limit the alcohol (surely red wine doesn’t count during winter?) and turn off the stimulating electronic devices. But what about the atmosphere in our bedroom? Is there any point doing everything right before we go to bed, only to feel wide awake again the moment we open the bedroom door?
This winter we have some simple tips to make sure that your chilled-out, wound-down feeling doesn’t head straight to the south pole when you open the door to your bedroom.
Take the edge off
Take the edge off the cold air in your bedroom by pulling the blinds or curtains during the evening to ensure any heat in the home isn’t lost through glass windows. If you are heating your living areas, leave your bedroom doors open to allow the heat in. Turn on your bedside lamps before bedtime so that your room has a soft, inviting glow when you go in. That relaxed, sleepy feeling will desert you quickly if your bedroom is brightly lit and freezing.
Invest in new bedlinen
Remember when you were a kid and mum used to put flannelette sheets on your bed in winter? If you want to avoid that torturous feeling of icy cold sheets on your skin when you hop into bed, buy a luxurious flannelette sheet set and feel the difference!
Spotlight have a great selection of individual flannelette sheets or sheet sets along with soft and snuggly mattress protectors for added woollen warmth or quilted cotton comfort beneath you. Change your neutral or white sheets to brighter colours or gentle pastel shades for the winter months to create an inviting look to your bed. Replace your summer quilt with a winter weight quilt or add blankets or bedspreads for added layers which will help you quickly drift off into heavenly slumber.
Consider your colour scheme and fabrics
Freshen up your accessories for winter and add splashes of colour to bring a comforting element to your bedroom. While whites and neutrals are fashionable, decorating with warm, contrasting colours make the bedroom atmosphere more relaxing. A soft red throw rug at the foot of your bed with accompanying red cushions will create a cosy feel, or a purple rug draped on a light neutral bedroom chair with a velour cushion will do the same thing.
Spotlight’s range of richly-coloured throw rugs, cushions and pillows will also create both style and comfort in your bedroom. Choosing your favourite colours or pastel shades can add those much-needed warmer tones to your décor. Using bulky, textured fabrics is a great way to add cosiness if you want to stay away from bright colours. Try faux fur cushions in rich, multi-hued brown tones or chocolate, navy or dark grey chunky-knitted throw rugs.
Declutter
It is so easy to accumulate clutter in your bedroom on the floor, dresser and on bedside tables. Clean up and find a new home for items that don’t need to be in your bedroom. When your bedroom is clean and tidy your brain associates it with a place to relax which is inviting and conducive to a stress-free sleep. Spotlight have a selection of home storage options such as hanging shelves, wire baskets, vacuum storage bags and stackable storage boxes if space is an issue.
Warm up the cold zone
The floor is the coldest part of your home. Putting soft wool or synthetic rugs beside the bed makes getting out of bed on a cold morning just a little more tolerable. Spotlight have a good range of rugs to suit your bedroom and your feet! Rugs also provide added insulation, so you are helping to retain heat in your bedroom with floor rugs. Choose colours, shapes or fibres that match with other elements in the bedroom to create a complete look that is inviting, relaxing and cosy.
With these subtle changes it’s so easy to transform your bedroom from a cold and cluttered storage room to the luxurious, cosy, sleep haven you’ve been dreaming of.
