Sick of the same old daily drive? It’s time to get out of the city and experience the amazing scenery, food, wine and adventure that Australia has to offer. But how does one choose between the incredible views of the Great Ocean Road and the freedom of the Central Outback? We take a look at five of the most iconic driving roads Down Under.

THE NULLARBOR PLAIN, WESTERN AUSTRALIA AND SOUTH AUSTRALIA

One of the world’s greatest adventure drives, the semi-arid Nullabor stretches across the southern edge of Australia. Cattle stations, cliff top lookouts and the world’s longest golf course are all part of the spectacular scenery of the sealed road, scattered with wild flora, native birds and eccentric bush characters (such as hairy-nosed wombats and dingoes).  Take your drive west to Perth through the Nullarbor Plain where kangaroos roam free for the ultimate bucket-list experience.

GREAT OCEAN ROAD, VICTORIA

Commonly referred to as one of the greatest drives in Australia, Great Ocean Road lives up to the hype thanks to its coastal scenic route. Highlights of the trip include the Twelve Apostles, Split Point Lighthouse and Warrnambool Art Gallery, nestled in amongst isolated beaches, incredible eateries and immense sights. So if food and wine are your calling, Great Ocean Road will not disappoint in the slightest.

GRAND PACIFIC DRIVE, NEW SOUTH WALES

A series of connecting scenic highways along the New South Wales South Coast, the Grand Pacific Drive includes the Royal National Park, Sea Cliff Bridge and coastal towns such as Wollongong, Shellharbour and Kiama. The perfect combination of food, wine and family discoveries, the trip’s dramatic coastal lookouts and dense forests will play the perfect backdrop for a scenic picnic (or two) in the coastal parklands.

THE SAVANNAH WAY, QUEENSLAND

The Savannah Way is one of Australia’s greatest adventure drives, linking Cairns with Broome on the Kimberley Coast of Western Australia. Traversing some of Australia’s most isolated country, the trip itself takes in 15 national parks and five World Heritage areas along the way. Enjoy its wide horizons, abundant wildlife and bragging rights once you’ve crossed the continent.

THE RED CENTRE, NORTHERN TERRITORY

Taking you to come of the most iconic Australian destinations, such as Uluru, Alice Springs and Kings Canyon, The Red Centre road trip tours through Central Australia’s most diverse landscape. Learn about the area’s Aboriginal history from the Arrernte people, immersing yourself in the art and pioneer history of Australia’s ancient centre.
