Eat more plant based food and improve your health
There’s good reason we’re being encouraged to eat more plant based foods in our diet.
The way we eat is having a huge impact on our health, with a rise in diabetes, obesity, and heart disease over recent decades.
Particularly in the populations of developed countries, consumption of protein is higher than what the body needs and most of it is animal based. Animal products like meat and dairy are high in saturated fats which are known to impact heart health whereas plant foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes (dried peas, beans, chickpeas, and lentils), nuts and seeds and seed oils have low saturated fats and are high in nutrition.
Dieticians are advising to make the shift towards eating more plant-based foods and less animal based products. This shift will assist to reduce overall consumption of protein (plant-based protein is not as concentrated as animal protein) and more importantly the consumption of trans fats and saturated fats.
Availability and affordability has led to this change in eating behaviour and now it is time to re-evaluate what we should be consuming in terms of quantity and whether it is animal or plant based. There was a time when chicken or beef /lamb was only for Sunday roast but this has changed significantly over time.
Aside from eating more plant- based foods we need to re-evaluate the fats we are using to prepare our meals. Olive, canola and sunflower oils are used mostly for shallow frying and cooking but when it comes to spreading, animal fats (like butter) are still being used for sandwiches, toast and veggies.
A simple shift from butter to plant-based spreads will reduce the consumption of saturated fats and improve nutrition for you and your family.
