It was almost a red carpet debut for Australia’s own The Kid Laroi and Tate McRae.

Dating for several months, fans were hoping the pair would go ruby rug official at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards in New York.

However they opted to make solo entrances at the star-studded event — but were snapped backstage holding hands at UBS Arena later in the evening.

McRae was nominated for two awards — Best Pop and Best Choreography — for her song Greedy, missing out to Taylor Swift and Dua Lipa respectively.

The Kid Laroi, whose real name is Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard, is scheduled to return home for a run of shows in November. That same month, McRae will also tour Australia.

Swift, meanwhile, became the most decorated solo artist in VMA history as she dominated the event by securing seven trophies and taking her total awards to 30 — topping off the week where she endorsed Kamala Harris in the US Presidential election race.

Katy Perry won the lifetime achievement prize, the Video Vanguard Award, while there were performances from the likes of Eminem, Lisa, Lenny Kravitz, Sabrina Carpenter, Shawn Mendes, Chappel Roan, and Teddy Swims.

Other winners included SZA, Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande and Megan Thee Stallion.

Troye Sivan was the only Australian nominee, up against McRae in the Best Choreography category for his global hit, Rush.
