Podcast stoush: ‘confusion’ claim over Matt Moran’s new SBS TV show
SBS’s new TV show Memory Bites with Matt Moran is at the centre of a stoush, with a prominent Sydney caterer and event organiser claiming it may will cause confusion.
A prominent Sydney caterer and event organiser has claimed the format of a new TV show starring Matt Moran will be confused with his successful podcast, Three Food Memories.
Public broadcaster SBS however said the program, Memory Bites with Matt Moran, will not be mistaken with Savva Savas’ long-running series.
“Memory Bites with Matt Moran takes a new spin on food programming, blending nostalgia with great twists on recipes,” an SBS spokesperson said in a statement on behalf of the broadcaster and production company Big Owl Pictures.
“The series dives into how defining food memories, and the people behind them, have shaped the lives and careers of well-known guests. This is an original new format and SBS is sure viewers won’t mix up the show with the podcast.”
Three Food Memories was launched by Savas in 2021 and has featured guests including Ita Buttrose, Natalie Imbruglia and Stephanie Alexander.
Recorded for video and audio, the concept sees Savas “literally break bread with his guests to discuss memories that reveal far more about themselves than simply the food they’ve tasted”.
Savas did not respond to requests for comment.
It is understood lawyers representing Savas have contacted SBS regarding the format claiming a number of similarities, including the use of the word ‘memory’ and the format tying in guest stories with a significant food memory.
Memory Bites with Matt Moran will premiere on SBS on March 10 with six episodes that will include guests Pia Miranda, Richard Roxburgh, Courtney Act, Christine Anu, Danielle Cormack and Ross Noble.
“Food has this incredible ability to take us back to defining moments in our lives,” Moran said in the series press release.
“In Memory Bites, I get to uncover the stories and memories behind some truly special dishes with some amazing Aussies. It’s all about great food, great company, and those unforgettable moments that remind us why food is so powerful in bringing us together.”
Miranda meanwhile has been a guest on Three Food Memories previously.
* J.Mo is a guest on an upcoming episode of Three Food Memories.
