‘Not a matter of wokeness’: Scene axed from new Crocodile Dundee cut

One of the most controversial scenes in the 1986 classic, Crocodile Dundee, has been cut, as the film returns to cinemas in 4K. Paul Hogan insists the decision has nothing to do with “wokeness”.

He may be one of the most iconic Australians of all time, but Paul Hogan, best known as Crocodile Dundee, is ready to adapt to today’s social norms.

The infamous groping scene, which has sparked controversy in recent times, has been cut from the new edition of Hogan’s iconic 1986 film, which is returning to cinema screens in 4K for the first time.

Speaking at the premiere of Crocodile Dundee: The Encore Cut at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair in Sydney on Thursday night, Hogan told The Daily Telegraph he had accepted the fact some of his scenes in the original film were not authentic to his Australian bushman character.

“It’s not a matter of wokeness,” Hogan said.

“(Mick Dundee) is outback. He wouldn’t grope people.”

While the 85-year-old icon is glad his film is being put back in the spotlight, he has assured fans not much has changed from the original.

“I’m thrilled about it,“ he said.

“(The original) was 40 years ago.

“I was never young and cute. I was already 47 when I made that movie.

“It shocks me a bit when I see it now. I think ‘woah, I look like my own grandad’.”

Despite his age, Hogan still believes he can put the infamous croc hat back on and play the role of Dundee, though there may be some difference in quality.

“It might be a bit embarrassing,” he laughed.
