63rd TV Week Logie Awards: Seven star Sonia Kruger wins Gold Logie
Gold Logie winner Sonia Kruger says she plans to apologise after copping a backlash for her “awkward” dig at fellow nominee Hamish Blake.
The 63rd TV Week Logie Awards – where Sam Pang smashed it as the first host in more than a decade and Sonia Kruger took home gold – saw 1.29 million tuning in nationally (877,000 metro) for Seven on Sunday night, in the first year of the award show’s return to the network.
While it was a resounding win for Channel 7 on the night, the all-important metro market numbers for the ceremony were a slight dip from the 885,000 metro viewers on its previous home on Nine last year.
The Red Carpet, hosted by Kruger and Dr Chris Brown ahead of the ceremony in his first gig with the network, attracted 1.2 million (846,000 metro viewers).
While social media reaction and reviews for Pang have been almost 100 per cent glowing, there’s been some negativity towards Kruger.
Some TV viewers were not impressed by her “awkward” acceptance speech in which she targeted last year’s Gold Logie winner Hamish Blake.
Kruger raised eyebrows when she made a lighthearted dig at Blake by paraphrasing their mutual agent as saying “I think people are a little over Hamish.”
One posted: “I really like Sonia but her acceptance speech … wow, not good Surely these professionals should know, if u don’t know what to say … say nothing. A few thank youse and stop blurting out words. So many regrets and apologies this morning. I felt awkward and bad for Hamish.”
Another added: “Please could we hear a genuine, gracious, humble acceptance speech next year. Stop trying to be funny when you’re not funny, especially when your attempted humour is based on belittling fellow entertainers.”
Speaking on KIIS 101.1’s Jase & Lauren on Monday, Kruger said she was exhausted by the time she got up to collect her Logie.
“I was making the joke about our agent, Hamish and I, and I think people took it seriously,” she said.
“It was an absolute joke and the agent found it funny, I hope Hamish did too. I must give him an apology email today.”
The 57-year-old Voice Australia host did have her supporters on social media, with many posting “onya Sonia” in reference to the relentless campaign started by Sunrise weather presenter Sam Mac and taken up with vigour by the new Logies broadcaster Channel 7.
Kruger earlier revealed the hilarious thought that was running through her mind the moment her name was announced.
“What was going through my mind was ‘I really want a cheeseburger and fries’,” she told Seven’s Sunrise hosts Nat Barr and Matt Shirvington on Monday.
“It was a long night and I think everyone was like, can we just get this done now so we can either get to the after-party or go back to our hotel rooms and relax?”
“I honestly thought it would go to Leigh (Sales) or Shaun Micallef or one of the other guys.
“So when they read my name out, I was absolutely gobsmacked. I had no idea what to do.”
Kruger said that her fellow mums in her school WhatsApp group may have gotten her over the line.
“On Friday, I sent a message out to the mums and I said, you know, it’s been eight years since a woman has won this award, let’s do it for our girls.
“Well, they galvanised, they rallied, they went to their friends. And I really think that the mother’s group got me through.”
Kruger said the Gold Logie would have pride of place in the bedroom of daughter Maggie, who would bring the statuette to school for show and tell.
The TV host told Nova radio she was operating on very little sleep as she didn’t get back to her hotel room until 3am and was up again getting her make-up done at 5.30am.
Kruger told host Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald how TV’s biggest stars let their hair down at Seven’s after-party.
Celebrities including husband-and-wife team Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer, the duo behind the Logie-winning series Colin From Accounts, were dancing on the tables, Kruger said.
“Oh, Fitzy it was going off. It’s the first year that we’ve all been able to party in the same venue. You know how we’ll see Seven has one, 10 has one Nine has one.
“So this was an all in party and I’m telling you people were dancing on the tables, and the chairs.
“It was just unbelievable and the biggest party animals were Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer, his wife. Those two were just carving it up and having such a good time.”
The Gold Logie winner earlier FaceTimed her daughter and would see her after she finished school, she told radio host Kate Ritchie.
The star’s day would include lots of coffee and a trip to McDonald’s, she said.
“I won’t see (Maggie) until this afternoon,” she said. “But my day will involve some hash browns, a sausage McMuffin. It’s already involved several cups of coffee.
“And then at some point in the afternoon there may be a nap, I think.”
KRUGER’S BIZARRE GOLD LOGIE SPEECH
A relentless “Onya Sonia” campaign by new Logies host network Seven scored prized host Kruger the coveted 2023 Gold Logie.
The host of The Voice, Big Brother and Dancing With The Stars won the coveted award from the favourite Hamish Blake.
Kruger attempted a lighthearted dig at Blake which fell flat when she “paraphrased” their mutual agent as saying “I think people are a little over Hamish.”
Blake’s wife Zoe gave an awkward smile and looked at the table as Kruger kept putting the boot into the Lego Masters host.
Equally as awkward was the bizarre attempt by the Gold Logie presenter Daryl Somers to “auction” the award among its seven nominees, with the room clearly wanting him to get on with the job after four long hours of speeches, performances and skits.
Kruger looked genuinely overcome with emotion as she walked up to the stage to accept her award from the triple-Gold Logie winner.
“I have to compose myself I cannot, I cannot believe that,” a visibly moved Kruger said.
“I have to compose myself, I am not used to being on TV Week. It is really ... This is so weird. To have you present it Darryl, I have been so lucky I have worked with some absolute legends in the business and some great people and my fellow nominees.
“I want to thank all the people who work on Dancing With The Stars, all the people who work on The Voice, all the people who work on Big Brother.
“I want to thank God, aka James Warburton, who, he is genius, my family, their names escape me. They know who they are. That is good. No, I am joking my mum, Deb, happy birthday for tomorrow. My brother, of course Craig and my daughter Maggie and if my dad was here he would just be so proud and this is really for him.”
She added that she and Dr Chris were walking around and saw a mural which says hosting is not about what you do, it is about how you make other people feel.
“And I thought, that is so true. And tonight you guys, all your support, you have made me feel so good, thank you Sam Mac for coming up with the campaign slogan too,” she said.
“But thank you so much. I don‘t know what else to say. So many people to thank and so little time. I will be sending out apology letters to everybody that I haven’t thanked to night. Go and party, have a good time. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Backstage, Kruger tried to walk her acceptance speech back, conceding it was “loose” as she did not expect to win.
“I was not expecting this, I think you probably could tell by my terrible acceptance speech,” she said.
“I wasn’t expecting it. I am blown away. It was very loose. There were people in that room I truly consider to be comedic genius and to be in the same group as them is a massive compliment.”
Kruger, 57, is one of our most prolific stars of the small screen with hosting gigs on a variety of shows over the years.
As an actor, she famously played Tina Sparkle in Baz Luhrmann’s Strictly Ballroom.
“It is probably just lack of preparation,” she said of her success.
“Because you have no choice but to be yourself. I did try acting very early in my career and I was bad. I couldn‘t learn lines, I am not very good with dialogue. Now, I’d say I am probably much better just kind of winging it although tonight I think I disproved that theory. I was like a deer in headlights.”
SAM NEILL GOBSMACKED TO WIN LOGIE
Brooke Satchwell was named the Most Outstanding Actress for her powerful performance in Foxtel’s The Twelve.
Satchwell wasn't at the awards, asking her co-star and fellow nominee Pallavi Sharda to accept the award on her behalf.
“Storytelling is about how we face challenges, how we rise and fall and most importantly, how we get back up again,” Sharda said, reading out Satchwell‘s speech.
She also ended off advocating for the Yes vote for the Voice to Parliament.
“Please listen to the heart of the nation, please vote with yours.”
A gobsmacked Sam Neill took home his second most outstanding Male Actor Logie, for his role in The Twelve saying “I think there’s been a mistake.”
“I think there’s been a mistake. I haven’t thought of anything to say,” he said, joking that he thought his name was there to make up the numbers.
“I don’t know why they gave this to me – I think it was the wig. It was the wig.”
He went on to joke that would despite him reprising his character in the second series of the Foxtel drama, it would be his last Logie.
“We’re doing another one of these, but I don’t get to wear the wig in that one – so this is it,”
“I’ve run out of things to say – this is silver, right? Do I have to clean this? It’s just more housekeeping.”
The cast of Foxtel production The Twelve, led by Neill and Marta Dusseldorp, took the stage to claim the Most Outstanding Drama Series award and dedicated it to “our guardian angel, Brian Walsh”.
COLIN FROM ACCOUNTS BAGS THREE LOGIES
Julia Zemiro told the Logies audience to “of course, say yes, (obviously) say yes” ahead of the Voice to Parliament referendum as she accepted the Silver Logie for Most Popular Actress on behalf of her Fisk co-star Kitty Flanagan.
The pair were both up for the award; Flanagan was unable to accept her trophy as she was performing a comedy show in Adelaide.
“Oh, this is awkward,” she joked before suggesting Flanagan had asked her to make the speech ”just to rub it in my face.”
Patrick Brammall won the Silver Logie for Most Outstanding Actor, completing a trilogy of trophies for Colin From Accounts.
He saved his final thanks to his partner Harriet Dyer who won the Most Outstanding Actress earlier in the awards.
“My main thanks obviously goes to my co-writer, co-showrunner, she’s also my wife, she’s also my muse and she’s funnier than me, she’s prettier than me, she’s younger than me, I’m just trying to keep up so this helps,” he said.
‘THIS IS FOR YOU’: JOCK ZONFRILLO TRIBUTE
Most Popular Reality Program went to MasterChef Australia: Fans and Favourites for Channel 10. It is the fifth win for the show in the category with judge Melissa Leong accepting the award.
Leong paid tribute to the late chef Jock Zonfrillo, who tragically died at the age of 46 on the eve of the most recent season.
“The stories told through food by our wonderful contestants is what makes the magic happen,” Leong said. “Thank you so to the audience for sticking with us through thick and thin, especially in the year that we‘ve had.”
Marty Benson, of production company EndemolShine Australia, said: “Standing here tonight, it is still hard to believe that my mate and our amazing judge Jock is no longer with us so big man, this is 100 per cent dedicated to you.”
Speaking to media backstage, Benson said the next season would begin shooting in November.
“We are starting to think about it,” Benson said of ‘what comes next’ following Zonfrillo’s untimely death. ”We just needed to ... and I hate to say this, let the dust settle so to speak. We will get there but it is slowly, slowly.”
Executive producer David Forster said: “It’s still incredibly shocking to us that this is all going ahead without Jock.
“He was the kind of presence where if he was up here with us now, he would be the only one anyone was looking at. He had this joie de vivre that was irrepressible and we all felt it, and we feel it more now that he’s gone.”
Veteran contestant and former MasterChef winner Julie Goodwin said: “As a family we grieve together, and as a family, we celebrate together.”
STEFANOVIC ‘BUMP’ JOKE FAIL
Karl Stefanovic‘s attempt at a little ad libbing fell flat. His former brekkie TV rival David Koch had earlier named the Stan series Bump as one of his favourite shows while on stage, leading to this apparent cocaine joke from Stefanovic.
“I did want to just check something... I am pretty sure before I heard Kochie say he loves Bump’s… season 3. Did anyone mishear that? Because I am pretty sure I did. Anyway, those are the headlines tomorrow morning ...” he said.
The room was confused – as was Kochie when the cameras cut to him, most possibly needing the joke – Bump’s third season, bumps of coke – explained to them.
“Karl doing a key bump joke that no one gets it seems,” a viewer tweeted.
While another added: “Kochie looking genuinely confused and annoyed that Karl Stefanovic made a cocaine joke about him.”
MCKENNEY DELIVERS SURPRISE DANCE NUMBER
Dancing with the Stars judge Todd McKenney hit the stage with an unexpected cabaret number dedicated to reality television and its low production costs, ahead of presenting the most popular reality program to MasterChef Australia.
Eagle-eyed social media users noted that it was akin to Hugh Jackman’s opening number at the 2009 Oscars.
One tweeted: “Todd McKenney copying Hugh Jackman’s 2009 Oscars opening song, the gag being that the Oscars were being “cheap”, whereas the Logies are just actually cheap.”
‘FLASHED MY NIPPLE’: DYER WINS LOGIE
Meanwhile, Colin From Accounts actress Harriet Dyer joined husband and co-creator Patrick Brammall with a Logie, joking the odds didn’t look in her favour to nab her first Silver Logie for Most Outstanding Actress.
“I don't condone gambling. I find it abhorrent and vile. But my parents have been watching the odds for this. And I wasn’t it. So... I wasn’t ready. I was up against some incredibly worthy and... Just this wealth of talent.
“And in the first episode-and-a-half of ‘Colin ’, I flashed my nipple, threw a turd out the window and pee in a bedroom drawer. Anyway, the people have spoken, I guess!
She paid tribute to Brammall for forcing her to write the Binge six-part comedy which has been receiving rave reviews across the world.
“I just want to thank Patty. He’s the best. He made me sit down and write this probably because I was being annoying in the house. If anyone could find a partner half as amazing as him, then you are going to have a great life,” she said.
Despite Tom Gleeson campaigning hard for his show to finally win the most popular entertainment program, Foxtel’s Gogglebox Australia took out the category, making it six Logies for the much-loved show about people watching television.
Producers Howard Myers and David McDonald said it was unbelievable that they were about to start their 18th season considering they were a show that nobody thought would work, before paying tribute to the late Goggleboxer Di Kershaw.
“Who I would really like to thank is our cast, our wonderful cast, most of which have been with us for nearly 10 years.
“And I think a testament to how beloved that cast is was last year when we lost Di Kershaw and I think people really felt that when we lost Di. I think if she was at home watching now, I am sure that she would say, ‘Oh for God sake get on with it, no-one knows who you are, just get on with it’.”
BRIAN WALSH HONOURED
Homegrown Hollywood superstars Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and his wife Deborra-Lee Furness, joined former Neighbours star Jason Donovan to thank the late Foxtel executive director Brian Walsh for their careers.
It was left to long time collaborator actress Marta Dusseldorp and new Sunrise host Matt Shirvington to pay tribute on the Star stage to their good friend and mentor, as he was posthumously awarded the highest honour in the Australian television industry – the Hall of Fame.
“Walshy, we miss you mate” Shirvo said, as he listed Walsh’s many achievements and shared how he helped him navigate the media when he was still an athlete.
‘UTTER DISBELIEF’: AMY SHARK’S LOGIES SHOCK
Pop star Amy Shark was clearly shocked to win this year’s Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent for her debut as a judge on Seven’s reboot of Australian Idol.
Shark was still backstage after her performance of her latest single Can I Shower At Yours, and dropped the F-bomb a few times as she made her way back on stage after her name was called from an impressive field of breakthrough actors and presenters.
“I’m in utter disbelief right now,” she said before pulling herself together to make the obligatory list of thank yous.
She also shouted out her husband manager Shane Billings “who really puts up with me a lot” and to her nan who was watching from home on the Gold Coast.
“My nan is at home watching and she’s going to be going wild right now.”
ABC news Breakfast presenter Tony Armstrong was completely shocked to win his second Logie, after winning the Graham Kennedy Award last year.
“Truly didn’t think this would happen,” he admitted.
“Everyone I’m up against is an ornament, I’m a baby.”
Then joked he would definitely be renegotiating his contract.
“I told Justin if on the off chance... He’s the big boss... I told him on the off chance if I won this, there would be a renegotiation. So, mate... My agents are calling!”
Host Sam Pang looked a little sheepish as he stood next to his co-stars Tom Gleisner and Ed Kavalee as Have You Been Paying Attention won the next award for Most Popular Comedy. The Front Bar, the star’s other gig on Ten, was also nominated in this category.
Kavalee matched his mate for savage sledges when he made a mock acceptance speech on Pang‘s behalf.
Kavalee said: “I have actually got Sam‘s speech. I am so happy to win this for my Seven home...” before noting the network had also previously employed Andrew O’Keefe, Ben Roberts-Smith and Craig McLachlan.
“Thanks, I’m up here for the rest of the night,” Pang quipped in response.
A slightly awkward moment followed for Pang, as he went to congratulate Home And Away stalwart Ray Meagher who was still backstage after Home And Away won the most popular drama.
“It’s getting pretty loose backstage, by the way... We can do this without him.
“In some big news, Ray just signed on for another five years. Congratulations! Isn’t that amazing!
“Not going to lie. This probably would have been better if he was here!
“Anyway. Ray Meagher, 35 years on ‘Home And Away’ signed on for another five years. That to me seems slightly optimistic, to be honest. But anyway, there we go.”
Comedian Dave Hughes presented the award for most outstanding Children’s program tipping his hat to one of the nominees’ Bluey and its 20 billion streams last year.
“There’s 7 billion people in the world. Everyone watched it three times apparently!” he said.
“Apparently children around the world are speaking in Australian accents. There is children in Mongolia speaking like me right now apparently! Anyway, all nominees are worthy.”
And it was shock win for ABC stablemate Crazy Fun Park. With production all surprised admitting they thought they had no chance against the might of Bluey.
Earlier, Heartbreak High star Thomas Weatherall took out the Most Outstanding Supporting Actor award for his star turn on the Netflix hit reboot.
PANG REVEALS WHY HE WAS CHOSEN TO HOST LOGIES
Sam Pang didn’t hold back as he kicked off the 63rd TV week Logie awards.
A video montage preceded his arrival on stage seeing the Have You Been Paying Attention regular seeking advice from previous hosts including Steve Vizard and Rove McManus, before 2002 host Wendy Harmer popped out of a closet – to tell him she’d been I witness protection. And that there’d been plenty of room for him if he failed.
A kiss to a poster of the late legendary Bert Newton, and a hug from Patti, as he headed to the Star’s auditorium.
Standing centre stage, his typical self-deprecating humour saw him acknowledge he wasn’t the network’s first choice.
“So let’s go through the list of people that Channel 7 asked, hey. So Hamish Blake said no,” he said.
“Thank you, Hamish, I really appreciate it, mate, some of us have appreciate it, mate, some of us have a mortgage ... By the way, a mortgage is when the bank loans ... Don‘t worry about it. Julia Morris said no. Tom Gleeson said no. Kitty Flanagan said no.
“Mick Molloy said yes. And Chen Channel 7 lawyers said no. Shaun Micallef said no. Celia Pacquola said no. Shane Jacobson said yes before knowing what the question was… Karl Stefanovic said yes, as long the show was held in a park in Noosa.
“Dave Hughes said no, Sonia Kruger said no and eventually it came down to two, and then Rolf Harris died so here I am.ar, Matt Shirvington, Natalie Barr, Poh Ling Yeow, Samantha Armytage, Sophie Monk and Tony Armstrong.

Pang turned to reality show Married At First Sight: “I’d like to welcome you to your last Logies.”
And then recently retired Sunrise host David Koch.
“Kochie retired after 21 years on Sunrise, well done. There is no doubt that you changed breakfast television forever. Warmth, humour, personality, you needed none of those. What a marvel you are sir, well done.”
“The world of television moves on quickly. Kochie is only here tonight because he is Larry Emdur’s plus one.”
Pang put paid to rumours he was set to replace Dr Chris Brown on I’m A Celebrity.
“As much as I love Julia, I think the last thing Australians who fought for this country want to see when they turn on the television is an Asian emerging from the jungle”.
After Pang‘s chuckle-worthy opening monologue which did not miss a target in the star-studded audience, the first of the night’s awards for Outstanding Comedy Program went to the Foxtel and Binge hit Colin From Accounts.
Its creators and stars, the husband and wife duo Brammall and Dyer, paid tribute to the series’ beloved “Colin” the dog, revealing two canine actors played the role.
“They’re both very good boys,” Brammall said.
The pair also had a shot at other networks who had passed on the quirky comedy series which has taken the world by storm.
“You absolutely know who you are,” Brammall said.
The Most Popular Drama Series award – voted for by viewers – went to Seven‘s much loved Aussie soap Home And Away for the second year running with the extensive cast of household names flanking Georgie Parker as she accepted the gong.
