The Geelong College 2020 graduates go on to great things
After an academic year like no other, these young leaders are on track to reach their career goals.
TO FIND strength in diversity, look no further than The Geelong College’s 2020 boarding student leadership team. Boys’ boarding co-captain Michael Pan is Chinese and lives with his family in Melbourne, while co-captain Lachy Bowker is from a farm at Princetown in the Western District. Girls’ captain Stephanie Williams is from a community just outside Darwin.
As leaders and VCE students last year, the trio faced challenges they weren’t expecting, but achieved across many fields.
Lachy received an ATAR of 96.50, and will this year study science at Melbourne University, with the intention of moving to a Bachelor of Data Science. He will live on campus and says boarding at Geelong College set him up to succeed.
“Being a boarder for so long has eliminated all the nerves I may have had for moving to Melbourne and has given me a leg up over other people who will be living away from home for the first time,” Lachy said.
Michael was the Proxima Dux of the school with an ATAR of 99.65. He is also studying at Melbourne University for a Bachelor of Science, majoring in mechatronics systems and living at home until all classes resume on campus.
“I feel very fulfilled after the past six years spent at Geelong College,” he said.
“I took advantage of many great opportunities across areas like academics, music and sports, and I know that even though some of these activities will not be carried through into life after school, I’m very certain that the skills I’ve gained from being involved will help me in countless disciplines and situations in the future.”
Stephanie was drafted to the AFLW Cats in October last year and played her first game last week.
In addition to training, she studies early childhood education at Deakin University and works with AFL Barwon as a game development officer.
“My time as a boarder at the Geelong College was of massive benefit,” she said. “It created opportunities; gave me a place to feel comfortable and grow as a young woman. I explored leadership roles, sports, expanded on my knowledge from school.”
