A top girls’ school has dominated the latest NAPLAN, taking out the best results for both Victoria’s primary and secondary students.

Presbyterian Ladies’ College has ranked in the No.1 spot for all students tested across the state, the 2019 test results revealed.

“We’re thrilled with these results, for our girls and our families,” principal Cheryl Penberthy said.

“It’s a great credit to our girls and our teachers.”

Mrs Penberthy said the school ran a consistent approach for learning across the junior and senior campuses, with a “spirit of getting involved in everything we offer”.

The latest data, uploaded to the My School site on Wednesday, showed government primary schools had almost equally as strong results as their private counterparts.

Eight of the top 20 primary schools for grades 3 and 5 results were a government campus.

Glendal Primary had news to celebrate — after becoming one of the most improved schools in the state, it ranked 10th place of all Victorian primary campuses.

“That’s incredible,” principal Deborah Grossek said.

“We will be celebrating — as a school, we have been working hard on student learning.”

The Glen Waverley campus had a goal to boost its students’ writing.

Student achievements in the subject boosted its performance to become one of the most improved in Victoria.

Meanwhile, private schools dominated for the secondary students, as girls’ campuses took 10 of the top 20 rankings.

While the 2019 NAPLAN results have been released, it’s understood this year’s testing could be under a cloud.

The impacts of the coronavirus could mean that gathering thousands of students to take the tests at the same time across the nation may not be feasible.

The My School website on Wednesday featured an overhaul of results, with less information now published after a review in favour of restriction.

Now, it will be harder for parents to compare schools or student achievements.

Instead, the focus was on progress of student cohorts, and results compared to pupils from a similar background.

The Australian Education Union believes the overhaul ignores the “real problems” of the annual test.

“It makes no difference how you present NAPLAN data when the data itself is irretrievably corrupted,” federal president Correna Haythorpe said.

Ms Haythorpe raised concerns over “corrupted data” due to the botched rollout of NAPLAN Online, where connectivity issues stopped thousands of students from completing the test.

“There is a growing consensus within the teaching profession that NAPLAN has got to go,” Ms Haythorpe said.

Victoria is among states involved in a breakaway review of NAPLAN, after the Federal Government refused to give its support.
