Saputo has fired the starting pistol on springtime step ups for southeastern Australia, with a 15 cent boost at the farmgate.

Melbourne-based management of the Canadian processor announced Saputo’s weighted average milk price would rise to $9.15-$9.25 per kilogram milk solids in Victoria and Tasmania, the first of the major processors to confer a refreshed price this financial year.

Saputo milk supply and planning director Kate Ryan said while there were “variable conditions” in domestic and international markets, the step up reflected “recent value realised by the business”.

“We appreciate the strong partnerships we’ve built with our farmers and we remain committed to fostering a sustainable dairy industry,” she said.

“In what continues to be a challenging year for farming communities, our team of field services, milk quality, agribusiness and feeds experts are also supporting and connecting suppliers with our partnership programs and services that best suit each farm’s unique needs.”

Saputo management said the step-up was retrospective and would be automatically applied to all qualifying milk supplied since July 1 by suppliers who entered into an exclusive milk supply agreement.

The payment will be made to eligible suppliers with their October proceeds during November.

Norco became the first processor to step up nationwide this season, lifting its offering to 90.37 cents per litre — equating to roughly $12.85 per kilo milk solids.

The dual-pronged farmgate lift is driven by a 1 cent per litre co-operative premium and an 0.5 cents per litre quality bonus payable from September 2025 for milk that meets specific quality thresholds.

Fonterra was the first processor to announce its 2025-26 opening price, with an average of $8.60 per kilo milk solids confirmed seven days out from the mandatory dairy code deadline before rising to $8.90 by July 1.

Bega has provided an $8.70-$9.20 per kilo milk solids range in Victoria and Lactalis at $9.20 per kilo milk solids.
