Lobby group GrainGrowers has called for the federal government to initiate an end-to-end investigation into the Australian grains supply chain, particularly given disparities between local and international pricing over the last two years.

The ‘holistic health check’ is required to ensure the system is working in the interests of the whole value chain and can continue to heavily contribute to the economy.

The organisation has also demanded greater price transparency mechanisms for critical inputs, such as fertiliser, after soaring costs wiped nearly $6 billion from farm production values in 2022.

“Greater price transparency mechanisms will go a long way to ensuring that growers have the necessary market information to make more informed purchasing decisions, enabling them to better manage price risk and compete on a more even playing field globally,” GrainGrowers chair Rhys Turton said.
