IB Diploma leads to scholarship for Kilmore grad

The Kilmore International School graduate Phoebe Nadenbousch credits her uni scholarship to the challenging International Baccalaureate Diploma program.

THE Kilmore International School graduate Phoebe Nadenbousch is on track to build a successful law career.

The former school captain said completing the school’s challenging International Baccalaureate Diploma helped her secure a scholarship to the University of Melbourne, where she plans to complete a Juris Doctor degree after her bachelor of arts.

“Kilmore fostered the growth of public speaking, critical thinking and research skills which has readied me for tertiary education,” said Phoebe, who graduated from Kilmore International last year with an ATAR above 95.

“Furthermore, such skills provide the confidence to campaign for what I believe in by engaging in discussion and research and having the courage to be an advocate on certain issues.

“I couldn’t have done so well anywhere else.”

As a school leader, Phoebe encouraged others to participate in sport, United Nations events, The Duke of Edinburgh Award and community service.

“For me, The Kilmore International School facilitated and encouraged participation in extra-curricular activities throughout my high school career,” said Phoebe, who grew up near Kilmore.

“Attending, taking part and eventually leading such activities and events has equipped me with the skills to pursue social development and promote meaningful change in the future.”

As part of the IB Diploma, students complete at least 50 hours of community service in the Community, Action and Service program.

Recognised globally, the IB Diploma is regarded by tertiary institutions for producing knowledgeable young adults with intercultural understanding who can learn independently.

The Kilmore International School is about 60km north of Melbourne’s CBD, and offers the IB Diploma to Year 10-12 students.

Teachers and staff believe the curriculum prepares students with the research skills and inquiry-based learning to excel at university.

Last year, more than half of the school’s Year 12 graduates scored an ATAR above 90, with six scholarships offered from Australian and overseas universities.

Last year’s Dux, Jack Heanly, was awarded a scholarship from the University of Melbourne to study Biomedicine.

The school has more than 400 day and boarding students, with boarders coming from around the world and local towns.

The curriculum also gives students a chance to learn another language, including German, Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, Indonesian or Vietnamese.
