They spent the summer fighting fires to defend their local turf — and Australian and US firefighters are now being lauded across the ocean for their mammoth effort.

A 70 foot tall billboard in the middle of New York’s Times Square has played footage of some of this season’s deadly flames and thanked fireys for their efforts.

“Imagine fighting a bush fire higher than this billboard”.

“We wanted to say a big “thank you” to all the firefighters who have worked so hard over the last few months, and to the community for its support. And when we say big, we mean big – 70 feet tall in Times Square, New York,” NSW Rural Fire Service wrote on social media.

“Thanks to Silvercast for donating the ad space – and Wunderman Thompson for bringing the idea to life!”

The digital ad gave passers-by a disturbing picture of just how tall the flames were that roared before RFS heroes this horror bushfire season.

And it’s not just the firefighters who got a shout out in one of the world’s most bustling corners.

Foundation and Friends of the Botanic Gardens were also featured on the mega screen for the 1.5 million people who pass through the area each day to see.

Chief executive Melissa Ellis said the campaign in Times Square will help boost funds.

“Our plants … Our life … Our home … Our future – it’s a message that resonates with everyone who cares about the planet and one that deserves to be broadcast from one of the world’s biggest advertising stages,” she said.
