Rare street art treasures up for auction to aid bushfire relief
Artwork by the famous English art rebel Banksy is among some of the best street art up for auction in Melbourne this weekend, with all proceeds going to the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.
One of the biggest art collections by street artists including Banksy, Rone, Adnate and Swoon will go under the hammer in Melbourne this weekend to raise money for bushfire relief.
The auction of almost 100 works has been curated by St Kilda collectors Sandra Powell and Andrew King who have even donated some of their personal collection to the sale.
The sale also includes an oil painting by prominent Melbourne artist Vincent Fantauzzo of a Tasmanian tiger which could attract the highest bids of up to $150,000.
Ms Powell and Mr King have donated their own much-sought-after Banksy work, Weston Super Mare, a highly collectable official print from the original stencil and with certificate of authenticity, which is expected to fetch $15,000 and $20,000.
“We have been overwhelmed by the immediacy of response and the incredible generosity of donations we’ve received from leading members of the worldwide street art community in support of the Bushfire Relief Auction,’’ Mr King said.
“Their enthusiasm has been nothing short of inspiring.”
“With international leaders such as Shepard Fairey, Swoon, D*Face, Ron English and Hush, plus local superstars like Rone, Anthony Lister, Adnate, Dabs Myla, Fintan Magee and Smug in the mix, the auction line-up is arguably the most comprehensive and diverse survey of street art ever assembled in Melbourne.”
The lots are available for viewing this weekend at auction house Leonard Joel in South Yarra before the auction at 6pm on Sunday.
