Parts of Victoria have been hit by their wettest March day on record as more rain is tipped to fall across the state this weekend.

The nightmare weather system that has wreaked havoc and caused mass flooding across NSW and Queensland over the past week eventually hit Victoria on Wednesday, bringing with it torrential rain and damaging winds.

Melbourne has so far avoided most of the impact, but a fresh low pressure system is set to bring showers and a possible thunderstorm on Saturday.

Weather bureau senior forecaster Keris Arndt said it had been a “very wet period” across eastern Victoria and the Otway Ranges in the past 48 hours.

Tidal River had the highest falls with 228mm, followed by Balook in the Strzelecki Ranges with 214mm, while 166mm fell nearby at Mount Tassie and 140mm fell at Yarram Airport.

Melbourne CBD recorded 6.6mm.

“Quite extensive rainfall and that area around the Strzelecki Ranges and Wilsons Promontory was the hardest hit,” Mr Arndt said.

“A lot of these sites through south and west Gippsland especially reported their wettest March day on record.”

He said the weather system that had caused a lot of issues through NSW, Victoria and now Tasmania had moved into the Tasman Sea, and Friday would be a “pretty fine” and dry day.

“It is a one-day wonder though,” Mr Arndt said.

“On Saturday, it’s a cold front that comes through and it brings some more rain across the state.

“We’ll see showers and thunderstorms extend across the state during Saturday and some slightly cooler weather for the remainder of the weekend.”

He said the weather would warm up throughout next week and reach the high 20s in Melbourne by Wednesday.

Minor flood warnings remain in place for the Snowy, Cann and Genoa rivers and a flood watch is in place for south Gippsland.
